MUMBAI – Chana prices are expected to remain under pressure during the coming days as arrivals of new chana and yellow peas are likely to increase, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in a weekly market update. Low demand amid increased selling pressure due to higher arrivals is likely to weigh on prices, it said.

The new crop is likely to arrive in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, the pulses body said. Meanwhile, chana imports from Australia are also likely to increase in the coming days, it added.

India's chana production in 2024-25 is pegged 4.5% higher at 11.54 million tonnes, according to the central government's second advanced estimates. The extension of duty-free imports of yellow peas, a cheaper substitute for chana, until the end of May is also likely to impact prices, it said.

"After Holi, chana prices will depend on the pace of arrivals, government procurement, and stockist buying," according to the pulses body. If government procurement increases, there could be some upside in prices. Currently, chana prices are below the minimum support price of INR 5,650 per 100 kg.

In Akola, Maharashtra, prices of chana for the week ended Saturday fell by INR 250 per 100 kg from the previous week, to INR 5,425-INR 5,450 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 150 per 100 kg to INR 5,600-INR 5,700 per 100 kg.  End
