MUMBAI – Prices of tur are likely to remain range-bound with slight fluctuations in the near term, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. According to market sources, minor fluctuations with a rise or fall of INR 100-200 per 100 kg are possible due to the financial year-end and liquidity issues, the report said.
Meanwhile, tur prices continued to fall in the week ended Saturday, despite fewer arrivals at spot markets. This decline in prices was due to weak demand for tur amid the availability of cheaper substitutes such as yellow peas and masoor.
"Slow tur dal sales also reduced raw tur demand, making traders hesitant to hold inventory. Additionally, low trade volumes were seen due to the Holi holiday and the end of the financial year," the report said. Demand for tur dal is likely to remain weak due to cheaper substitutes and lower consumption during the summer, the report said.
In the week ended Saturday, prices of tur in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 150 per 100 kg to INR 7,350-INR 7,375 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, fell by INR 206 per 100 kg to INR 6,200-INR 7,600 per 100 kg.
Tur prices will primarily depend on the ongoing government procurement and imports, according to the association. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India has procured nearly 90,420.77 tonnes of tur under the price support scheme as of Mar. 12. Tur imports increased 42% to 1.25 million tonnes in 2024 (Jan-Dec) from 887,222.32 tonnes in 2023 during same months.
Tur production in 2024-25 is estimated at 3.51 million tonnes, 2.75% higher than 3.42 million toonnes in 2023-24, according to second advance estimates. End
