MUMBAI – The Solvent Extractors' Association of India sees the country's mustard production in the 2024-25 rabi season at 11.52 million tonnes. The estimate is based on an analysis by the association in collaboration with SatSure, a global technology company that specialises in satellite remote sensing, data analytics, and artificial intelligence. In 2023-24, India's mustard production was at an all-time high of 11.58 million tonnes.

The association's field survey and SatSure's satellite-driven analysis estimated a 11.1% decline in acreage to 9.2 million hectares in 2024-25 rabi season. In 2023-24, the mustard acreage was 10.0 million hectares.

SatSure provides services like combining satellite imagery with AI-driven models. It delivers insights across sectors like agriculture, insurance, finance, and infrastructure management. The SEA partnered with SatSure to deploy a comprehensive satellite-based monitoring for mustard crop surveillance during the rabi season.

Among the states, Rajasthan remains the largest mustard producer, covering 3.5 million hectares with an estimated production of 5.2 million tonnes. Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are expected to cultivate 1.5 million hectares and 1.4 million hectares, respectively, producing 1.5 million tonnes and 1.6 million tonnes of mustard. Haryana, another key contributor, is estimated to cover 714,000 hectares, producing 1.2 million tonnes of mustard crop. Other states like West Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam, and Gujarat show stable acreage with slight increases, the analysis showed.

Field observations indicated positive crop growth trends, especially in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and West Bengal, ensuring healthy production. However, due to unfavourable weather in November, farmers opted for more lucrative rabi crops like wheat and pulses, the association said in a press release.

Despite the current mustard prices being above the minimum support price of INR 5,950 per 100 kg, the relative profitability of wheat and pulses remained higher, discouraging widespread mustard cultivation, the release said. As on Tuesday, mustard prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were in the range of INR 6,000-INR 6,025 per 100 kg.

"The current MSP for mustard is INR 5,950 per 100 kg. Mustard price already touched MSP and likely to go down with the arrival pressure. Government must gear up the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd., and other agencies to buy at the MSP to protect the farmers," the release quoted B.V. Mehta, executive director of the association, as saying.

The association will conduct the third and final field survey in Apr-May to revalidate its production, acreage and yield estimates, the release said.  End
