MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh rose on Wednesday as demand picked up after prices fell significantly in the previous few days, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady on Wednesday due to demand-supply parity, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg as there was good demand after prices fell by INR 100 per 100 kg in the past one week, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Prices could increase further in the coming days, owing to demand from bulk consumers of sugar such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers amid rising temperatures throughout the country, Gupta said.

The India Meteorological Department has warned of heat wave to severe heat wave conditions in several parts of the country. The weather agency sees a very high likelihood of warm night conditions in parts of Saurashtra, Kutch, and Odisha. Hot and humid weather is also likely in coastal Karnataka, it said.

Sugar prices were on a downtrend during the past few days due to poor demand during Ramzan, the Islamic month for fasting, said Gupta. However, prices started recovering as demand picked up at significantly lower prices, he said.

Prices of the sweetener in Maharshtra were steady on Wednesday as demand and supply were on a par, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to remain at current levels in the coming days, Kuvadia said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market Wednesday:

-Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,930-INR 4,030 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

-Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,930-INR 4,030 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

-Flat at INR 4,072-INR 4,132 per 100 kg in Kolhapur, Maharashtra

-Flat at INR 3,972-INR 4,070 per 100 kg in Mumbai, Maharashtra

At 1527 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 1.1% at 18.88 cents per pound, tracking gains in crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Higher prices of crude oil encourage diversion of sugarcane towards production of ethanol, leading to a fall in sugar supplies.  End

US$1 = INR 87.21
