MUMBAI – The US Department of Agriculture has raised its global cotton production estimate for 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) to 120.96 million bales, from its estimate of 120.46 million bales last month. One bale equals 217.72 kg. Higher production for China more than offsets reductions for Pakistan and Argentina, it said in its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report for March.

Production in China is pegged at 31.75 million bales, up from 31.0 million bales forecast in February. The production estimate for Brazil remains steady at 17 million bales in March. The estimate for production in India was steady at 25 million bales, the report said.

The Cotton Association of India has lowered its etimate of local cotton production for 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) by 645,000 bales to 29.50 million bales (1 bale = 170 kg) in February. In January, it had lowered its estimate of the country's cotton production to 30.18 million bales. The association kept its estimate of total domestic cosumption of cotton unchanged at 31.50 million bales.

The USDA has lowerd its estimate for global ending stocks by 80,000 bales to 78.3 million bales.

Global cotton consumption has been estimated at 116.54 million bales, up from 115.95 million bales predicted last month. Consumption is expectd to increase in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Egypt, more than offsetting small changes elsewhere, the department said.

Global cotton import estimates are seen higher at 42.69 million bales from 42.47 million bales estmiated last month. "Imports by China are lowered but are more than offset by increases for Pakistan, Bangladesh and Egypt," the report said.  End
