MUMBAI – India's soymeal exports fell 35% on year and 45% on month to 154,000 tonnes in February, the Soybean Processors Association of India said in a release on Tuesday. For Oct-Feb, soymeal exports fell to 950,000 tonnes from 1.2 million tonnes a year ago, SOPA said.

India exported soymeal to more than 50 countries from October to February, with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran, France, Germany, Kenya, Nepal, Netherlands, Japan, and Sri Lanka being the major buyers, according to data released by the association.

Production of soymeal in February fell to 710,000 tonnes from 789,000 tonnes a year ago. The output in Oct-Feb fell to 4.1 million tonnes from 4.5 million tonnes a year ago, the association said. Soybean, a kharif oilseed, is sown in Jun-Jul and harvested in Oct-Nov.

Soybean arrivals in spot markets were at 850,000 tonnes in February, up from 800,000 tonnes a year ago. During Oct-Feb, arrivals fell to 6.6 million tonnes from 7.0 million tonnes a year ago.

Distillers' dried grains with solubles, widely known as DDGS, is increasingly being preferred as poultry feed as it is cheaper than soymeal, said Indrajit Paul, head of Agrocorp International. Hence, the feed industry is gradually replacing soymeal with distillers' dried grains with solubles, he added.

Distiller's dried grains with solubles consist of undigested grain components resulting from grain ethanol fermentation. It is used as a feed ingredient substitute due to its high nutritional content and low production cost.

At the end of February, oil mills, traders, and farmers were left with around 6.8 million tonnes of soybean stock, down from 7.7 million tonnes a month ago, the association said. The meal stock at the end of February was 132,000 tonnes, against 156,000 tonnes a month ago.

Soymeal is a byproduct of the extraction of soyoil, primarily used as poultry and livestock feed. Indian soymeal is non-genetically modified and considered rich in protein. India is among the largest importers of soyoil and an exporter of soymeal.  End
