NEW DELHI – The Indian Sugar Mills & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association will host a meeting Wednesday to explore collaboration between India and Japan on carbon credits, Director General Deepak Ballani told Informist. "There will be some 20 Japanese companies in the meet to discuss carbon credits for biofuels," he said.

India is the world's third-largest carbon dioxide emitter and has been looking to attract investment and technology to be deployed on projects to help mitigate pollution and generate credits. A company purchases carbon credits to offset unavoidable carbon emissions.

The emissions are measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Carbon credits can be generated by reducing the amount of carbon released or through reforestation, which takes in carbon from the atmosphere. A carbon market enables the buying, selling, transfer, and exchange of carbon credits.

"The meeting will include officials from Japan's embassy in India, and the joint secretary (sugar)," Ballani said, adding that the two countries look forward to sharing technological knowledge on carbon credits.  End
