NEW DELHI – The Indian Sugar Mills & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association will hold an executive committee meeting Wednesday to discuss sugar output estimates and other issues relating to the industry, Director General Deepak Ballani said. "It is a routine board meeting with some 24 items on the agenda," Ballani said. "Thirty-six member mills will be there."
The trade body has estimated sugar production in the country to fall 14.4% on year to 27.3 million tonnes in the sugar season ending September. Other industry bodies like the All India Sugar Trade Association and the National Federation of Sugar Cooperative Factories have estimated sugar output to fall to 26.5 million tonnes.
Other items on the agenda include ethanol pricing and the ethanol blending programme. The industry will explore strategies to urge ethanol price hikes and discuss the likely sugar diversion for the year. According to the trade body's earlier estimates, mills are likely to divert 3.75 million tonnes of sucrose for ethanol production in the ethanol year 2024-25 (Oct-Nov).
The private mills' body will also discuss the recent ethanol interest subvention scheme announced exclusively for cooperative sugar mills. The scheme will help cooperative mills to expand to multi-feedstock-based ethanol plants from existing sugarcane-based units. This will allow cooperative mills to make ethanol from maize and damaged food grain.
The government, on Friday, announced an interest subvention of 6% per annum or 50% of the interest rate charged by financial institutions, whichever is lower, for five years, including a one-year moratorium. Private mills see the policy as discriminatory. The government has been pushing cooperatives as it gave cooperative mills preferential allocation for ethanol supply orders in 2024-25. End
