MUMBAI – Prices of pulses fell in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana fell due to low demand and higher arrivals of the rabi crop, they said. Prices of tur also fell due to sluggish demand as mills and stockists have already purchased enough of the legume for their needs, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore in Madhya Pradesh fell by INR 50 Monday to INR 5,700-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices are weighed down by low demand as traders reduced buying ahead of the Holi break and the financial year-end. Holika Dahan will take place on Thursday, while Holi is on Friday. Some markets may also remain shut on Mar. 19 for Rang Panchami, he said.

Prices are also down due to a rise in arrivals of the rabi crop, Kochar said. According to the agriculture ministry's second advance estimates released Monday, chana output in 2024-25 is pegged at 11.5 million tonnes, down from 12.3 million tonnes a year ago.

Kochar said the government's decision to extend duty-free imports of yellow peas till May 31 had no impact on chana prices. "The government's decision has changed nothing, it is business as usual for yellow peas," he said. Yellow pea is used as a cheaper substitute for chana.

The government on Saturday extended duty-free imports of yellow peas till May 31. Imports of yellow peas during Apr-Nov were at 1.57 million tonnes, the highest among all pulses, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Prices of chana at Bikaner in Rajasthan also fell by INR 50 to INR 5,500-INR 5,550 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

TUR prices at Solapur in Maharashtra fell by INR 50 to INR 6,500-INR 7,350 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. There is no demand for the legume as mills have already stocked up for their processing needs, he said. Demand from stockists has also fallen, he said.

While arrivals should have decreased by now, it is yet to happen due to a higher production of tur in the state, Sanklecha said. Tur production in Maharashtra rose to 1.19 million tonnes from 890,000 tonnes in the kharif season. The agriculture ministry's second advance estimate has pegged tur production in 2024-25 at 3.5 million tonnes, unchanged from the first estimate.

Prices of tur at Katni in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 6,000-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were steady at 500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). The minimum support price of tur is INR 7,550 per 100 kg.

MASUR prices in Indore fell by INR 175 to INR 6,100-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, Kochar said. On Saturday, masur prices had risen by INR 175 in reaction to the government's decision to levy an 11% import duty on the imports of masur, Kochar said. But on Monday, prices were back to their previous levels, shedding the knee-jerk reaction to the announcement, he said.

Imports of masur will now attract 11% duty, including 5% basic customs duty, 5% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess, and 1% Social Welfare Cess. Earlier, the government had allowed duty-free import of masur till Mar. 31. The second advance estimate has pegged masur production in 2024-25 at 1.8 million tonnes.

Prices of the moti variety of masur at Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,650-INR 5,825 per 100 kg. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 5,900-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
