MUMBAI - Prices of chana are likely to remain under pressure due to low demand, rising arrivals from the rabi crop, and ample stocks of Australian chana and yellow peas, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday.
On Saturday, the government extended duty-free imports of yellow peas till May 31. Imports of yellow peas in Apr-Nov stood at 1.57 million tonnes, the highest among imports of all pulses, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Yellow peas are a cheaper alternative to chana.
Spot markets are likely to see lower trading activity as mills reduce buying ahead of the Holi break and the financial year-end, the association said. Holika Dahan will take place on Thursday, while Holi is on Friday. However, the government's procurement to build buffer stocks, along with limited sales by farmers could prevent a steep fall in prices.
In the week ended Saturday, chana prices remained weak due to low demand as traders and millers made only need-based purchases, the association said. Trading was minimal in the spot markets in anticipation of a rise in arrivals of the rabi crop after Holi, ample imports of Australian chana due to record production in the country, and the availability of yellow peas.
Chana production in Australia is expected to hit a record high of 2.27 million tonnes in the crop year 2024-25 (Jul-Jun), up a whopping 362% on year from 491,000 tonnes in 2023-24, according to the quarterly crop report released by the country's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry.
In Akola, Maharashtra, prices of chana in the week ended Saturday fell by INR 25 per 100 kg from the previous week to INR 5,675-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 5,700-INR 5,850 per 100 kg. End
