Andhra Pradesh rabi sowing up 10% as of Wed, paddy up 16.5%

MUMBAI - Sowing of rabi crops in Andhra Pradesh as of Wednesday was at 1.8 million hectares, up 10% from 1.6 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report by the state agriculture department. Paddy acreage is up by 16.5% at 656,000 hectares from 563,000 hectares last year.

 

The acreage under maize is up at 180,000 hectares from 152,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. On the other hand, the area sown under jowar has fallen to 75,000 hectares from 96,000 hectares last year.

 

In Andhra Pradesh, rabi crops are sown after the monsoon and harvested between April and May. The rabi crops majorly grown in the state include paddy, maize, Bengal gram or desi chana, urad, and groundnut. For the ongoing season, the state has set a sowing target of 2.31 million hectares, of which nearly 80% has been achieved so far, according to the report.

 

Chana acreage was unchanged at 301,000 hectares, the report showed. The acreage under black gram, or urad, was 277,000 hectares, up from 266,000 hectares last year. Total area sown under all pulses has risen to 733,000 hectares from 669,000 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds fell to 69,000 hectares from 103,000 hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, groundnut acreage was 52,000 hectares, down from 68,000 hectares last year.

 

Tobacco acreage in the state so far has risen to 119,000 hectares from 78,000 hectares sown in the same period last year, the report showed.

 

The paddy crop is at the 'tillering to harvesting' stage, according to the report. Jowar is at the 'flowering to maturity' stage, while maize is at the 'grain filling to harvesting' stage, it said. The chana crop is at the pod development to harvesting stage and horsegram, or kulthi dal, and tobacco are at the harvesting stage. Moong and urad are at the 'flowering to harvesting' stage.

 

The water level in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh was 53.1% of the live storage capacity as of Thursday, compared to 29.2% a year ago, according to the state's water resources department.  End
