NEW DELHI – The Uttarakhand government has kept the state-advised price of sugarcane for 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) unchanged from last year. Sugar mills in the state will pay sugarcane farmers INR 375 per 100 kg for early variety and INR 365 per 100 kg for common variety for the ongoing season, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Monday.
States such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab also intervene in sugarcane pricing by announcing state-advised prices, which are usually higher than the fair and remunerative price set by the Centre. The sugar mills located in these states are mandated to pay farmers according to state-advised prices.
In February last year, the Centre increased the fair and remunerative price for sugarcane by 7.9% to INR 340 per 100 kg for the 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) sugar season, with a basic recovery rate of 10.25%. The recovery rate is the proportion of sugar extracted from sugarcane.
As of Friday, mills in Uttarakhand had produced 295,000 tonnes of sugar, up from 280,000 tonnes in the corresponding period last year, the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. The state is expected to produce 350,000 tonnes of sugar in 2024-25, up from 310,000 tonnes last year, according to the federation.
India's sugar production in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) is likely to fall to 26.5 million tonnes from 31.9 million tonnes the previous year, according to the federation. Sugar production is seen lower due to fall in output of major sugar producers like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka. End
