MUMBAI – Chana production in Australia is expected to hit a record high of 2.27 million tonnes in the crop year 2024-25 (Jul-Jun), up a whopping 362% on year from 491,000 tonnes in 2023-24, according to the quarterly crop report released by the country's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry. The likely rise in production is due to larger acreage driven by India's tariff-free period for chana imports.
In December, the Australian government had pegged chana production at 1.89 million tonnes. A record national yield, given the optimal planting and growing conditions in New South Wales and Queensland, has raised the output outlook in March, the report said.
India's duty-free import policy on chana, urad, and masur is set to expire on Mar. 31. Australia is the largest exporter of chana to India, with 120,341.88 tonnes imported from the country in Apr-Nov, according to data from India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
On the other hand, Australia's production of masur in the current crop year is seen falling 26% on year to 1.16 million tonnes due to drier weather conditions in the southern regions of the country, where the crop is grown. However, the production remains well above the 10-year average of 764,000 tonnes, the report said.
Australia is also the largest exporter of masur to India, with 284,730.99 tonnes imported by the latter in Apr-Nov, data from the ministry showed. Though the duty-free policy on masur imports is set to expire at the end of the month, imports from Australia will remain unaffected due to a trade agreement between the two countries. Under the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, Australian masur exporters have access to a quota of 150,000 tonne with 50% in-quota tariff reduction, the report said. End
