MUMBAI – Mustard prices fell in Jaipur as arrivals jumped in the spot markets in Rajasthan, which reopened on Monday after a week-long protest, traders said. Soyabean prices fell in Indore due to weak demand, while groundnut prices were steady at Gondal in Gujarat, they said.

MUSTARD seed prices were in the range of INR 6,125-INR 6,150 per 100 kg in Jaipur, down INR 200 per tonne from prices on Feb. 21, a trader from Marudhar Trading Agency said. Spot markets in Rajasthan were shut since Feb. 23, with traders and market participants protesting against the Krishi Kalyan Cess.

Due to the increasing arrivals of new mustard crops after the protests, prices are under pressure, the trader said. Traders in Rajasthan have been protesting against the mandi tax, claiming that the state was losing business to Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, where the tax either does not exist or is very low, said Mahesh Sameriya, a trader from the state.

SOYBEAN prices fell INR 100 to INR 3,700-INR 4,150 per 100 kg in Indore even though the arrivals were down by 200 bags at 4,200 bags (1 bag = 90 kg), Shailendra Soni, a local trader, said. Due to sluggish demand from millers, abundant supply in markets and lower procurement by the government, the oilseeds prices are still below the minimum support price, Soni said. The market participants expect the bearish trend to continue due to poor demand for Indian soymeal in the global market, he said.

GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal were steady at INR 4,950-INR 6,350 per 100 kg, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. "No improvement is expected in groundnut in the near-term due to continuous arrival of poor quality groundnut and sluggish export demand," he said. The government procured most of the good quality groundnut, and farmers are not keen to sell at the lower prices, he said.
