MUMBAI – The government has raised the sugar sales quotas for March for Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, according to a notification from the Department of Food and Public Distribution. The all-India quota for the month has already been set at 2.3 million tonnes, 2.2% higher than last month, but down 2.1% on year from 2.35 million tonnes.
The sales quotas for Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh were raised nearly 3.5% and 0.7%, respectively, to 849,778 tonnes and 695,138 tonnes. However, the quota for Karnataka, another major sugar producer, was cut 8.8% to 368,515 tonnes. The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers.
Mills across the country have 8.5 million tonnes of sugar stock as of Jan. 31. The sugar season 2023-24 closed on Sept. 30 with a stock of 7.8 million tonnes.
The government has deducted the March sales quota for those mills that violated the stock-holding limit and sold more sugar than their December quota. "The excess quantity of sugar sold during December 2024 is deducted from the release quota of March 2025," the notification said. A lower quota restricts mills from selling the sugar they have produced.
However, those mills that failed to sell as per the December quota have been exempted due to low demand and depressed prices during the month, the notification said.
The following table details the state-wise allocation of sugar sales limits for March, with the month-ago level, and the month-on-month change in percentage:
