MUMBAI – Urad prices are expected to remain firm in the short term as the government has not yet announced any extension of the open general licence for importing the pulse ahead of the free import policy set to expire on Mar. 31, the India Pulses and Grains Association said Monday in its weekly report. The government had first allowed the import of urad dal under the 'free category' on May 15, 2021, and it was valid till Oct. 31, 2021. Subsequently, the free regime was extended.

Market participants in India, Myanmar, and Brazil are waiting for the open general licence extension decision, the association said. Open general licence allows the import or export of certain goods without requiring a specific individual permit, usually within the regulations of a country's import-export policy.

Further, seasonal demand for papad production, a shortage of good quality urad, low domestic arrivals, and depriciation of the rupee against dollar are also likely to support urad prices, the association said. However, it added that a rise in rabi arrivals in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are likely to restrict the upside in prices.

Market trends will depend on selling strategy of Myanmar exporters, the association said. In the week ended Saturday, urad prices showed mixed trends. Prices of urad were up INR 25 from the previous week at INR 7,325 per 100 kg in Mumbai due to low stock, while those in Delhi were down INR 50 at INR 7,550 per 100 kg because of cautious buying by mills at higher rates.

However, prices of the pulse in the key market of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh were steady from the previous week at INR 7,900 per 100 kg on Saturday. On a yearly basis, urad prices fell INR 1,400 per 100 kg from INR 9,300 per 100 kg, the association's data showed.  End
