MUMBAI – Tur prices are likely to remain subdued in the short term due to steady domestic arrivals and weak demand from mills, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. The availability yellow pea dal and masur dal, which are cheaper substitutes for tur dal, could also weigh on prices.

Demand for tur dal is expected to be muted due to Ramadan and earlier-than-expected onset of summer, the association said.

The fall in prices could be limited as farmers are holding onto their stocks and refusing to sell at lower rates, limiting arrivals in the market despite a good kharif crop, the association said. In the medium term, prices could stabilise if the processing margins do not improve, causing mills to reduce production. The government's slow procurement of tur could also keep prices steady, it said.

Prices could rise only if demand for tur dal increases or availability of cheaper substitutes reduces, the association said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of tur remained subdued due to fall in demand from mills and weak demand for tur dal. Prices of tur in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 25 per 100 kg from the earlier week to INR 7,700-INR 7,725 per 100 kg, according to the association. On the other hand, prices of tur at Kalaburagi in Karnataka, rose by INR 203 per 100 kg to INR 6,100-INR 8,112 per 100 kg.  End
