--Govt sets wheat procurement target in 2025-26 at 31 mln tn

 

NEW DELHI – The Centre has set wheat procurement target at 31 mln tn for 2025-26 rabi marketing season starting in April, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, said in a press release Satuday. Similarly, rice procurement during kharif marketing season 2024-25 for the rabi crop (Oct-Sept) is set at 7.0 mln tn, it added. Food Corp. of India typically starts procurement of rice in April. 

 

While the target for wheat procurement mirrors the target set for the previous year, the government has revised its rice procurement target for the 2024-25 kharif marketing season (Oct-Sept) for the rabi crop, fixing it at 7.0 million tonnes. This represents a reduction of 2.0-3.0 million tonnes from the previous year's target range of 9.0 to 10.0 million tonnes.

 

To be sure, the government's wheat procurement for the 2024-25 season had reached 26.6 million tonnes, exceeding the 26.2 million tonnes procured in 2023-24. However, it fell short of the 2024-25 target of 31 million tonnes, and the 2023-24 target of 34.15 million tonnes.

 

Meanwhile, the government aims to procure 1.6 mln tn coarse grains including millets during the rabi crop of 2024-25 to diversify crops and enhance nutrition in dietary patterns. The state governments have been advised on procurement of millets for diversification of crops and enhanced nutrition in dietary patterns.  End
