MUMBAI – The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. has increased the upper limit for sale of mustard seed procured in the rabi marketing season 2022-23 (Apr-Mar) and 2023-24 to 4,000 tonnes from 2,000 tonnes per buyer per location, according to a notice. The federation is currently selling mustard seed procured in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 rabi marketing seasons. Buyers have to register on the federation's online portal, it said.

"The government agency is under pressure to procure the new mustard crop under the Price Support Scheme during rabi (marketing season) 2024-25, hence it is selling old mustard seed to millers and interested buyers," said a trader from the Marudhar Trading Agency who asked not to be identified. There have been huge arrivals of the new mustard crop at various mandis. With festival season demand set to rise with the onset of Ramadan and, later, Holi, arrivals are expected to rise further. Also, according to market participants, older mustard seed is more in demand by millers as the oil extracted from it is of better quality.

"They want to dispose of their old season crop to make space for new crop which they will start buying soon," said Indrajit Paul, head of research at Agrocorp International. Purchase of new rabi mustard seeds will begin around Mar. 15, he said.  End
