MUMBAI – Tur prices are likely to move in a range this week, according to a weekly market update by the India Pulses and Grains Association. Demand for tur dal may remain weak because there are no festivals until Holi in the middle of March, and few weddings take place in this period, it said.

With millers having to sell tur dal at lower rates, demand from them for raw tur has slowed down, which in turn is weighing on tur prices, the pulses body said. Heat waves in this period may also impact demand, it said. On Monday, tur prices in Akola in Maharashtra fell by INR 50 from Friday to INR 7,650-INR 7,675 per 100 kg. However, after mid-March, a correction is expected in desi and lemon varieties of tur, the association said.

While raw tur is available in large quantities with farmers, they are unwilling to sell at lower rates in the open market after seeing higher rates last year, the association said. The government is also not procuring aggressively, it said. "It's a wait-and-watch situation overall," it said.

Domestic tur prices increased during the week ended Friday owing to lower arrivals, with farmers holding back supplies. Prices of Burma origin lemon variety tur moved higher because of strong demand from millers, higher Myanmar cost and freight quotes, the rupee's depreciation against the dollar, and a shortage of ready lemon tur stock, it said. African tur prices rose because stock was limited, the association said.  End
