MUMBAI – Chana prices are expected to remain under pressure in the near term due to ample supply and weak and cautious buying, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. The rabi harvest of chana in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat from March is likely to prevent any major increase in prices, it said.

Chana prices, both imported and domestic, stayed lower during the week ended on Saturday due to lower purchases by millers and weak demand for chana dal and besan. "Millers were cautious due to selling pressure of new crop and also increase in new rabi crop arrivals and plenty of cheaper imports," the association said.

Although yellow peas prices rose during the week due to expected import duties after Feb. 28, chana demand remained low because of enough stocks. During the week ended Saturday, prices of chana in Indore in  Madhya Pradesh were down by INR 300 per 100 kg from the previous week at INR 5,800-INR 5,850 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of chana in Akola in Maharashtra fell by INR 250 per 100 kg from last week to INR 5,775-INR 5,800 per 100 kg.

India imported 688,343 tonnes of chana from Australia during Nov-Feb, according to the association. "India allowed 1 million tonnes of chickpeas to be exported tariff-free in the December quarter, with another 400,000 tonnes expected this quarter," it said.  The situation for chickpeas may become clearer in April when there is more information on the rabi crop and stock levels, it said. Australian exporters are preparing for tariffs on chickpeas and lentils to return from Apr. 1.

However, chana prices may gain short-term support from government procurement and festival demand for Holi and Ramadan. Price may stay supported at lower rates due to buying by stockists and farmers unwilling to sell at lower prices in southern markets, the association added. End
