NEW DELHI – Sugar production in Maharashtra, the country's top producer, has declined 16.5% on year to 7.10 million tonnes as of Thursday in the sugar year 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) from 8.53 million tonnes a year ago, according to data from the state sugar commissionerate. Sugar output has fallen amid a decline in sugarcane yields.

A total of 38 mills have finished crushing for the season in the state against 11 mills in the same period a year ago, the data showed. This includes 25 mills in Solapur, five in Nanded, four in Kolhapur, three in Pune, and one unit in the Ahilyanagar region, formerly Ahmednagar. Mills saw early closure this year due to lower availability of sugarcane and the lower sugar recovery rate.

The average sugar recovery rate in the state fell to 9.3% from 9.9% last year, the data showed. Currently, 162 mills are running in the state, against 196 units during the corresponding period last year.

As of Feb. 15, mills in Maharashtra had paid INR 184.80 billion to sugarcane growers, or 87.1% of the total amount payable so far in 2024-25, the data showed. Sugar mills pay farmers government-set prices for sugarcane purchases. The Centre has set the fair and remunerative price for sugarcane at 340 rupees per 100 kg for 2024-25, with a basic recovery rate of 10.25%.

For the current sugar season ending September, India is estimated to produce 27.3 million tonnes, down 14.4% from 31.9 million tonnes last year, according to the Indian Sugar Mills & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association.  End
