Global primary aluminium output down slightly in Jan

MUMBAI – Global production of primary aluminium declined marginally to 6.252 million tonnes in January from 6.254 million tonnes a month ago, data from the International Aluminium Institute showed. On an annual basis, production rose 2.7% from 6.09 million tonnes. 

 

Global daily average aluminium production in January was at 201,700 tonnes, unchanged from a month ago. In 2024, total production of the metal rose 3% on year to 72.86 million tonnes from 70.72 million tonnes in 2023.

 

Aluminium production in China rose by 6,000 tonnes to 3.74 million tonnes in January, the data showed. The country accounts for nearly 60% of the metal's global production. Daily average aluminium production in China rose to 120,645 tonnes in January from 120,451 tonnes in December.

 

In Asia, excluding China, production rose to 411,000 tonnes in January from 409,000 tonnes a month ago. In Africa, the output in January fell 1,000 tonnes to 137,000 tonnes.

 

In the Gulf Cooperation Council, production increased by 1,000 tonnes to 541,000 tonnes in January. Production of primary aluminium in Europe, including Russia, fell to 597,000 tonnes in January from 607,000 tonnes in the previous month. Output of the metal in North America declined by 1,000 tonnes to 337,000 tonnes in January, while production rose by 1,000 tonnes to 131,000 tonnes in South America.

 

Global alumina production in December rose 3.4% on month to 12.85 million tonnes, as per the latest available data. At 1811 IST, the three-month aluminium futures contract on the London Metal Exchange was down 1.3% at $2,692.50 per tonne.  End
