--RBI: Dec FDI gross inflows $6.84 bln vs $5.37 bln Nov, $4.63 bln yr ago

MUMBAI – Gross foreign direct investment into India in December was at $6.84 billion, up from $5.37 billion in November, according to the Reserve Bank of India's bulletin for February. In December last year, gross FDI investment into India was $4.63 billion.

The net FDI inflows in December stood at $707 million compared with outflows of $2.63 billion in November, according to RBI data. The net outflows were $656 million in December last year. Total FDI inflows include equity capital, reinvested earnings, and other capital.

Gross inflow of foreign direct investment in Apr-Dec rose 20.6% to $62.48 billion. Manufacturing, financial services, electricity and other energy, and communication services accounted for more than 60% of the FDI inflows, according to an RBI staff paper in the monthly bulletin. Singapore, Mauritius, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, and the US were the major sources of FDI flows into India, the paper said.

Net inward FDI flows fell slightly to $18.49 billion in Apr-Dec from $18.76 billion a year ago, reflecting a rise in repatriation.

The net foreign portfolio investment outflows in January were $6.7 billion from India's debt and equities. Outflows worth $8.4 billion in equities due to rising risk-off sentiment among investors were slightly cushioned by net inflows of $1.7 billion into Indian debt, the paper said. The inclusion of Indian government bonds in the Bloomberg Emerging Market Local Currency index on Jan. 31 brought more than $1 billion worth of FPI flows into Indian debt, the paper said.

Debt inflows into India remained strong during Apr-Jan compared to peer economies, cushioning the effect of equity sell-offs.  End
