MUMBAI – Prices of tur and chana fell, while prices of masur were steady in key spot spot markets across the country. Prices of tur are likely to be volatile in the short term amid muted demand from millers, purchases by stockists, and the government's procurement activities. Prices of chana were weighed down by sluggish demand and pressure from rising rabi arrivals.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by INR 100 from Tuesday to INR 6,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. Currently, the market is volatile, with prices flutuating by INR 100-INR 200 every two-three days, he said. Though demand from millers is expected to rise only in March, prices could be supported by stockists' purchases, he said. "The volitality in prices is partly dependent on how active the stockists are on the given day," he said.

Prices could be supported by the government's procurement activities in Karnataka and Maharashtra. The Karnataka government has announced a bonus of INR 450 above the minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kg, taking the total procurement price in the state to INR 8,000 per 100 kg.

As of Monday, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India purchased 2,101.65 tonnes of tur, out of the 306,150 tonnes approved by the government for procurement in Karnataka, according to data from the federation. NAFED has procured 2.75 tonnes of tur in Maharashtra so far.

On the other hand, prices of tur in Kalaburagi in Karnataka rose by INR 56 from Tuesday to INR 6,356-INR 8,139 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals rose by 342 bags to 3,875 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

CHANA prices in Delhi fell by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 6,000 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. Prices were weighed down by muted demand, he said. Rising arrivals of the new rabi crop are also pushing prices down, he said. Small arrivals of the rabi crop have begun in Madhya Pradesh, while new arrivals are underway in full swing in Maharashtra and Karnataka, he said. The quality of new arrivals is good, he said.

Prices of chana in the short term will depend on the government's decison on import duty on yellow peas, Kochar said.

Informist on Thursday reported, quoting Food Minister Pralhad Joshi, that the government would stop the duty-free import of yellow peas. The zero import duty on yellow peas is applicable till Feb. 28.

Prices of chana in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 5,850-INR 5,875 per 100 kg, according to the association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices are expected to fall once arrivals of the new rabi crop begin by March, he said. However, after the initial fall, demand is expected to rise, pushing prices up, he said.

As of Feb. 3, rabi sowing of masur was at 1.74 million hectares, unchanged from a year ago, according to data from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare.

Prices of the moti variety of masur were steady at Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh at INR 5,400-INR 5,800 per 100 kg. Prices of the choti variety were also steady at INR 5,700-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, the association said.  End
