MUMBAI – India's castor production is estimated to decline 8% on year 1.8 million tonnes in 2024-25 due to lower sowing in key states, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India said Monday. The area under castor cultivation in India is estimated to be 12% lower on year at 867,000 hectares, the association said, citing an AgriWatch crop survey. However, the total yield is likely to rise 5% on year to 2,101 kg per hectare due to favourable weather conditions, it said.
Castor acreage is expected to decline in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, it said. In Gujarat and Rajasthan, castor acreage in 2024-25 is estimated to fall by 11% on year to 646,000 hectares and by 12% on year to 170,000 hectares, respectively.
The yield in Gujarat is projected at 2,281 kg per hectare, up 5% on year, while production is estimated at around 1.5 million tonnes, reflecting a 6% on year decrease. In Rajasthan, yield is estimated at 1,677 kg per hectare, up 3% on year while production is expected to be 285,000 tonnes, down 9% on year, it said.
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana castor acreage is estimated at 37,500 hectares, down 38% on year from 60,100 hectares in 2023-24, it said. However, yield is projected at 1,440 kg per hectare, up 8% on year in 2024-25. Production of castor is estimated at 54,000 tonnes down 33% on year, mainly due to reduced acreage.
"Yield estimates remain subject to revision based on weather conditions and will be updated accordingly," the association said. End
