MUMBAI – Prices of tur rose while those of chana and masur were steady in key spot markets in the country, traders said. Prices of tur were supported by demand from millers and the procurement by the Karnataka government, they said. Prices of chana and masur are seen falling when arrivals of the rabi crop begin in full swing, they said.

TUR prices at Solapur in Maharashtra rose by INR 100 on Monday to INR 6,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg, Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader said. Demand from millers for processing has risen, he said. The Karnataka government's procurement of tur is also supporting prices, he said. The state government has announced a bonus of INR 450 above the minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kg, taking the total procurement price in the state to INR 8,000 per 100 kg.

Prices will also be supported by the slowdown in arrivals, Sanklecha said. "Soon the Solapur market will only receive kharif crop arrivals from Maharashtra as farmers in Karnataka will be more keen to sell their produce to the government due to the bonus," he said.

Prices of tur at Kalaburagi in Karnataka were steady at INR 6,056-INR 8,126 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals of tur in the market were at 3,948 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

CHANA prices in Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, Kailash Kakani, a local trader said. "There is some demand for both the old chana stocks and the new arrivals of the rabi crop," he said. The market has begun receiving some arrivals of the new crop from Madhya Pradesh, he said.

Prices are seen falling further by March when the new rabi arrivals begin in full swing, Kakani said. Prices could fall to INR 5,500 per 100 kg by then, he said.

On the news of a likely reimposition of import duty on yellow peas, Kakani said it would have no effect on chana prices till the official notification comes out. "Chana prices could find some support once the government releases the notification announcing import duty on yellow peas, but that too, won't last for long due to rising arrival pressure," he said. Yellow peas are used as a cheaper alternative to chana.

Informist Thursday reported, quoting Food Minister Pralhad Joshi, that the government will stop the duty-free import of yellow peas. The zero import duty on yellow peas is applicable till Feb. 28.

Prices of chana at Akola in Maharashtra fell by 50 on Monday to INR 5,950-INR 5,975 per 100 kg, according to the association. The arrivals were 10,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) in the market.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, Dinesh Mangal, a local trader, said. Prices are expected to fall once arrivals of the new rabi crop begin by March he said. However, after the initial fall demand is expected to rise, pushing prices up, he said.

The rabi sowing of masur as on Feb. 3 was at 1.74 million hectares, unchanged from a year ago, according to data from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare.

Prices of the moti variety of masur were steady at Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh at INR 5,400-INR 5,800 per 100 kg. Prices of the choti variety were also steady at INR 5,700-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, the association said.  End
