Wheat institute asks farmers to irrigate crop in case of high temperature

MUMBAI – The Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has advised farmers to irrigate their wheat crop in case of high temperature. It has advised farmers in south Haryana and north Rajasthan to provide irrigation through sprinkler system around IST 1400 to IST 1430 on the day of high temperature for an hour.
On Friday, the research institute released an advisory for wheat crop till Feb. 28. It advised farmers to irrigate the wheat crop as per the need when wind speed is low to avoid lodging of the crop. In case of a rise in temperature above 30 degrees Celsius, it is advisable to spray water mixed with muriate of potash or potassium nitrate after the flowering period of plant. It also advised farmers to avoid irrigation if there is a forecast of rain to avoid a situation of excess water.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted a warmer February. The weather in February plays an important role in determining wheat output as the crop in most of India would be in the harvesting stage. On Sunday, the department said a further rise of 1-3 degrees Celsius in minimum and maximum temperatures is likely over parts of northwest and central India till Wednesday. Northwest and central India include key wheat-growing states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.
According to the weather department, rainfall over northwest India during Oct-Dec was 55?low normal at 23.4 mm and that over central India was 10% lower than normal at 68.5 mm. Similarly, in January, rainfall in northwest India was 80.6?low normal at 6.3 mm and in central India, it was 96.1?low normal at at 0.3 mm. End
