NEW DELHI – India's pulses imports are likely to fall in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) owing to better domestic production on the back of a good monsoon, India Pulses and Grains Association Chairman Bimal Kothari told the media at Pulses Conclave 2025.

"India imported heavily last year as bad weather hit the country's production. With the rabi output (Oct-Mar) for FY25 looking up, we expect import numbers to fall," he said, without giving an exact estimate of what the numbers might be. "Of the total imports last year, almost half at 3 million tonnes were of yellow peas. So, I feel that if the production of chana, which is looking good this year, helps keep prices low, we will see a drop in the imports as government re-imposes import restrictions," he said.

The association, he said, had made a representation to the government, asking it to fix duties so that prices of the imported produce do not fall below the minimum selling price. "We have told them that the cost of import should not be cheaper than the MSP. It hurts the farmers and defeats the purpose of having an MSP," he said.

According to trade data, India is estimated to have imported 6.63 million tonnes of pulses in 2024, compared with 3.31 million tonnes in 2023. Yellow peas, imports of which were made duty-free in 2023, had the largest share in the import basket of pulses at 2.9 million tonnes, or 45% of the total.  End
