MUMBAI – Prices of tur rose in key spot markets across the country as stockists began bulk purchases, even as prices of chana and masur were steady, traders said. Chana prices are expected to rise slightly due to a likely increase in demand, before falling again as the new rabi crop starts arriving in the markets, they said.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 100 from Thursday to INR 7,500-INR 7,525 per 100 kg, a local trader said. Arrivals were steady at 8,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Demand from stockists has increased as they have begun bulk purchases, now that prices are at a lower range, the trader said. Prices have been on a downtrend due to rising arrivals of the kharif crop.
The pressure from continuous arrivals of kharif tur remains, the trader said, and prices may remain in a range for the next few weeks before seeing an upward trend once arrivals start slowing down.
Prices of tur in Kalaburagi in Karnataka rose by INR 50 from Thursday to INR 6,200-INR 8,169 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals rose by 22 bags to 2,787 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,150-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader, adding that prices are expected to rise in the next few days. "The seasonal demand ahead of Ramadan and other festivities in the first few months of the year is expected to begin," Jain said. This year, Ramadan starts on Feb. 28 and ends on Mar. 29.
However, prices of chana may come under pressure once arrivals of the rabi crop begin, Jain said. Supply of the rabi crop from Maharashtra will begin in the next 15 days, while arrivals from Madhya Pradesh will begin by mid-March, he said.
The prices of new chana in Akola were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals rose by 200 bags to 1,700 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices of the new rabi crop in Kalaburagi rose by INR 15 from Thursday to INR 5,915-INR 6,159 per 100 kg. Arrivals fell by 111 bags to 133 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices are expected to fall once arrivals of the new rabi crop begin after 15 days, he said. However, after the initial fall, demand is expected to rise, pushing prices up, he said.
As of Friday, masur acreage in the current rabi season remained unchanged at 1.74 million hectares, according to data from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare.
Prices of the moti variety of masur were steady in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh at INR 5,200-INR 5,750 per 100 kg. Prices of the choti variety also remained steady at INR 5,700-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, the association said. End
