MUMBAI – Domestic production of non-ferrous metals and key minerals like iron ore saw steady growth in the first nine months of financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), fueled by strong demand in India, the Ministry of Mines said in a release Monday. During Apr-Dec, iron ore production increased by 2.5% on year to 208 million tonnes and output of manganese ore grew by 8.3% on year to 2.6 million tonnes.

Production of chromite rose 9.5% to 2.3 million tonnes, from 2.1 million tonnes in the same period last year. Bauxite production saw a 6.5% on-year increase to 18.1 million tonnes during Apr-Dec, according to the release.

Iron ore accounts for 69% of the total mineral production under the mineral conservation and development rules, in value terms, it said. Iron ore output in FY24 was 274 million tonnes.

Among non-ferrous metals, production of primary aluminium rose to 3.16 million tonnes in Apr-Dec from 3.12 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year, marking a 1.6% growth. Refined copper output rose 7.3% on year to 396,000 tonnes in the same period, the release said.

India, the second-largest aluminium producer and the fourth-largest iron ore producer in the world, is also among the top 10 producers of refined copper in the world, as per the release. The ongoing increase in iron ore production, along with higher copper and aluminium output, indicates sustained strong economic activity in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, construction, automotive, and machinery, according to the release.  End
