MUMBAI – Prices of tur dal are likely to fall in the short term as arrivals of the pulse are expected to increase, while demand remains weak, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly market outlook. In addition, government procurement is unlikely to start before Feb. 15-20 because of the Delhi elections, and prices will remain under pressure, it said.
Domestic tur prices stayed under pressure in major markets during the week ended Saturday due to weak demand and cautious buying by mills as the tur that arrived in mandis had a higher moisture content, the trade body said. Kharif tur arrivals in January increased 29% on year and were also higher than in arrivals in December.
Millers, especially from processing hubs and Delhi, showed little interest in buying tur from Karnataka and Maharashtra (Khamgaon market) for crushing due to quality issues and reduced crushing margins, it said. Arrivals in Vidarbha are still low, and moisture content in arrivals is limiting mill purchases, the association said.
However, once procurement begins in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat, it will limit further price drops. State procurement could boost sales to government agencies, which will reduce supplies to the mandis and therefore support prices, the association said. Better yields and higher quality of tur may also attract millers for crushing.
Prices of tur in Akola, Maharashtra fell INR 175 per 100 kg from the previous week to INR 7,300-INR 7,350 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. End
