MUMBAI – India's overall pulses import, which includes chana, tur, urad, masur, and yellow peas, is estimated at 6.6 million tonnes in 2024, double that of 3.3 million tonnes in 2023, according to data from IGrain India Pvt. Ltd. Imports are seen making up 24.6% of the country's annual consumption of pulses that stands at 27 million tonnes, according to the data.

Import of yellow peas is expected to touch nearly 3 million tonnes in 2024, according to the data. The imports for Jan-Nov stood at 2.7 million tonnes, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. India began importing yellow peas only after the government did away with the 50% import duty on the pulse in December 2023. 

Imports of tur are pegged at 1.2 million tonnes for 2024, up 39% from 887,222.32 tonnes in 2023, the data showed. According to data from the ministry, tur imports in Jan-Nov stood at 1.1 million tonnes.

Chana imports in 2024 are estimated to have risen by 338.2% to 574,000 tonnes, from 131,883.87 tonnes in 2023, as per the data. In Jan-Nov, the country imported 231,650.6 tonnes of chana, according to data from the ministry.

Imports of urad are also seen to have risen to 765,000 tonnes, up nearly 28% from 598,741.43 tonnes in 2023. Masur imports are seen lower by nearly 35% to 1.1 million tonnes from 1.7 million tonnes in 2023, the data showed.  End
