Gujarat estimates rabi chana output at 1.6 mln tn, up 45.4% on yr

MUMBAI – The output of chana in Gujarat in the ongoing rabi season is expected to rise 45.4% on year to 1.6 million tonnes from 1.1 million tonnes, according to the first advance estimates of area, production and yield released by the state's agriculture department.
The total rabi production in the state is estimated to rise 3.7% on year to 28.9 million tonnes compared with 27.9 million tonnes a year ago, according to the data. The total output of food grain is seen at 6.4 million tonnes, up 17.5% on year from 5.4 million tonnes produced last year.
Within food grains, total cereal production is pegged to rise to 4.8 million tonnes from 4.3 million tonnes last year. Wheat output is expected to rise 11.3% on year to 4.3 million tonnes from 3.9 million tonnes a year ago. Rabi maize production is seen rising to 355,380 tonnes from 324,550 tonnes last year.
The total rabi output of pulses in the state is estimated at 1.6 million tonnes, up from 1.1 million tonnes produced in the rabi season last year. Chana is the main rabi pulse crop in Gujarat. Moong production is projected to fall to 18,5600 tonnes from 24,250 tonnes a year ago.
The production of rapeseed and mustard is likely to fall to 514,720 tonnes from 526,540 tonnes a year ago, according to the data.
The output of onions is expected to rise nearly 40% on year to 2.7 million tonnes from 1.9 million tonnes produced in the previous rabi season. Potato production is also seen rising to 4.9 million tonnes from 4.3 million tonnes a year ago, the data showed.
Sugarcane output is projected at 13.3 million tonnes, down from 14.5 million tonnes a year ago, according to the data. The production of tobacco is estimated at 369,120 tonnes, up from 312,570 tonnes last year.
The production of cumin is estimated to fall to 365,760 tonnes from 418,270 tonnes a year ago and coriander is seen rising to 224,330 tonnes from 204,940 tonnes last year, the data showed. End
