State Maharashtra sugar output down 17.5% on yr as of Tue - Sugar Commissionerate

NEW DELHI – Sugar production in Maharashtra, the top producer, has declined 17.5% on year to 4.75 million tonnes as of Tuesday in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) from 5.76 million tonnes last year, according to the state's Sugar Commissionerate data. Sugar output has fallen amid delayed commencement of crushing operations and lower yield in the state.
As of Tuesday, 196 mills were operational in Maharashtra against 206 last year, the data showed. Meanwhile, the state's sugar recovery rate, or sugar extracted while crushing sugarcane, stands at 8.9%, down from 9.4% last year.
Around 40 mills in Kolhapur division produced 1.36 million tonnes of sugar, with the highest recovery rate in the state, at 10.5%. In Pune division, 31 mills made 1.14 million tonnes of sugar, with an average recovery rate of 8.9%, the data showed.
In Solapur, though 43 mills were operational, they produced only 710,900 tonnes sugar as the recovery rate was 7.7%. The 26 mills in Ahmednagar division produced 564,300 tonnes sugar, with an 8.3% recovery rate.
In Nanded, 29 mills priduced 550,100 tonnes of the sweetener, with a recovery rate of 9.1%. Other sugar-producing divisions are Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Amravati, and Nagpur. Nagpur registered the lowest sugar recovery rate at 4.9%, the data showed.
As of Dec. 31, India produced 9.54 million tonne sugar, down 15.6% on year from 11.3 million tonnes last year. All major sugar producing states – Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat – have registered an on-year decline in sugar production. End
