MUMBAI – Prices of chana fell in key spot markets across the country Tuesday due to the availability of cheaper imports from Australia, traders said. Prices of tur and masur were steady. Prices of tur and masur are seen falling due to a rise in arrivals, they said.

CHANA prices in Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh fell by INR 50-INR 100 from Monday to INR 5,400-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Dinesh Mangal, a local trader said. Prices are weighed down by the availability of cheaper imported chana from Australia, he said. Australian chana is priced at INR 5,900-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, he said.

Australia exported 349,904 tonnes of chana in November, up significantly from 32,698 tonnes exported a year ago, according to data from the Australia Bureau of Statistics. The jump in numbers is due to a much larger chana crop in Australia and higher demand from India, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

Prices of chana in Solapur in Maharashtra also fell by INR 100 from Monday to INR 6,100-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, according to the association.

Kalaburagi market in Karnataka began receiving few arrivals of the new rabi crop, according to the association. The market received 116 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the new chana, priced at INR 5,811-INR 6,014 per 100 kg, according to the association.

Prices of TUR in Akola in Maharashtra were steady at INR 7,600-INR 7,650 per 100 kg, Ashok Gupta, a local trader said. Arrivals rose by 2,000 bags to 7,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). While there is demand for tur, prices are not rising due to the poor quality of tur, he said. "The new arrivals of the kharif crop from Maharashtra have a high moisture content of 15-20%, which fetches lower prices," he said. The pulse should have a moisture content of only 10-12% or below to be considered good quality, he said.

While prices are stable currently, they could fall below the minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kg in the next few weeks due to a rise in arrivals of the kharif crop, Gupta said. However, they will not drop below INR 7,000 per 100 kg as the quality of arrivals is expected to improve soon, he said. "Even with the government extending the free imports of tur for another year, the market will resist prices below INR 7,000 per 100 kg," he said.

The government has extended duty-free imports of pigeon pea, or tur, by another year, till Mar. 31, 2026, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification on Tuesday.

Prices of tur in Kalaburagi were also steady at INR 6,200-INR 8,152 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals fell by 865 bags to 5,200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg)

MASUR prices in Vidisha were steady at INR 5,500-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, with arrivals of 100 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Mangal said. Prices are expected to fall once arrivals of the new rabi crop begin, he said. As of Monday, masur acreage in the ongoing rabi season was down nearly 2% at 1.74 million hectares, according to data from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare.

Prices of the moti variety of masur were steady in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh at INR 5,400-INR 5,850 per 100 kg. Prices of the choti variety were also steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, the association said.  End
