MUMBAI – India's oilmeal exports in December fell 25% on year to 398,731 tonnes, according to data released by The Solvent Extractors' Association of India. For Apr-Dec, total oilmeal exports were down 10% at 3.15 million tonnes, the data showed. This was mainly due to a fall in the exports of rapeseed meal and castor seed meal, the association said.
In December, exports of mustard meal fell to 88,746 tonnes from 216,942 tonnes a year ago. Similarly, during Apr-Dec, exports of rapeseed fell to 1.41 million tonnes from 1.82 million tonnes in the year-ago period. Bangladesh, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam are the major importers of rapeseed meal.
Exports of castor seed meal fell to 28,452 tonnes in December from 42,393 tonnes a year ago, the association said. For Apr-Dec, exports of castor meal were down at 226,279 tonnes compared to 296,514 tonnes a year ago.
Exports of soymeal in December rose to 278,413 tonnes from 273,394 tonnes a year ago. Similarly, soymeal exports in Apr-Dec rose to 1.49 million tonnes from 1.21 million tonnes a year ago. This was due to higher imports of soymeal by European buyers such as Germany and France, the association said.
"However, in recent months, with the increased supply of soybean meal in the world market, Indian soybean meal is facing severe competition, as crushing till the end of December was lower, resulting in a drop in production of soymeal and consumption and export is likely to slow down in coming months," the association said in the report.
Increased production and supply of distiller's dried grains with solubles from maize and grains dampen the demand for oilmeals in the local market, the association said. Also, for rapeseed meal, Bangladesh, one of the major markets, faced uncertainty, leading to a reduction in volume in recent months, which is reflected in the overall reduction in the export of rapeseed meal during the last few months, it said. In Apr-Dec, 1.07 million tonnes of oilmeal were exported from the Kandla port, against 1.02 million tonnes a year ago, and a total of 713,123 tonnes were exported from the Mundra port, compared with 1.17 million tonnes a year ago, the SEA said. During the same period, exports from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai rose to 507,228 tonnes from 276,699 tonnes a year ago, the association said.
From the Kolkata port, export of oilmeal was just 11,494 tonnes in Apr-Dec compared with 110,223 tonnes a year ago. Oilmeal exports from other ports during the same period stood at 843,273 tonnes compared with 924,631 tonnes in the corresponding period last year, the SEA said.
During Apr-Dec, India's oilmeal exports to Bangladesh fell nearly 17% on year to 547,657 tonnes. Similarly, exports to Vietnam fell nearly 47% to 193,035 tonnes, the data showed. Oilmeal exports to South Korea were at 534,984 tonnes, lower than 730,188 tonnes a year ago, the data showed. "Iran has turned out to be the largest importer of soybean meal from India (including shipment via Dubai) and imported 154,975 tons of soybean meal," the SEA said.
