MUMBAI – In the 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) season, mills in India have produced 13.1 million tonnes of sugar as of Wednesday, down 13.7% from 15.1 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories.
The federation estimates net sugar production across the country in 2024-25 at 27 million tonnes, down 15.4% from 31.9 million tonnes produced last season. Sugarcane production so far this season is down due to a decline in crushing in major producing states such as Karnataka, Gujarat, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu.
As of Wednesday, 196 mills across Maharashtra, which is the top sugar manufacturer, have produced 4.3 million tonnes of the sweetener, down 18.7% on year from 5.3 million a year ago, according to the federation. Last year, 206 mills were active in the same period.
The country's average sugar recovery rate was 8.8%, compared to 9.4% last year, the federation said. So far this season, mills have crushed 148.2 million tonnes of sugarcane, compared to 161.3 million tonnes a year ago.
In Uttar Pradesh, 122 mills crushed 47.3 million tonnes of sugarcane to produce 4.3 million tonnes of sugar, down 7% on year. This is slightly higher than the production during the same period last year, when 120 mills had crushed 46.6 million tonnes of sugarcane and produced 4.6 million tonnes of sugar. Sugar production in the state is estimated to be 9.3 million tonnes in the current year, down from 10.4 million tonnes the previous year. The average sugar recovery is also down at 9.1% from 9.9% a year ago.
As of Wednesday, 77 mills in Karnataka crushed 31.9 million tonnes of sugarcane, compared to 32.3 million tonnes crushed by 74 mills a year ago. Mills in the state have produced 2.7 million tonnes of sugar, down 12.6% from 3.1 million tonnes a year ago.
The federation estimates sugar output in Karnataka at 4.1 million tonnes in 2024-25, down from 5.3 million tonnes last year. The average sugar recovery rate has been lowered to 8.5% from 9.6% during the previous year. End
