Most mkts shut for Makar Sankranti; wheat seen unch till mid-Feb

MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and rice in the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai remained unchanged, traders said. Prices of wheat, rice, and maize were unavailable in other key spot markets as they were shut on account of Makar Sankranti, traders said.
Prices of mill-quality WHEAT were steady at INR 3,450 per 100 kg in the Navi Mumbai market, Devendra Vora, a wholesale dealer, said, adding that prices are likely to remain elevated till the new crop starts arriving after mid-February. Prices of wheat in Ashok Nagar, Madhya Pradesh, Kota, Rajasthan, and Delhi were unavailable.
The area sown under wheat, the main rabi crop, was up 1.4% on year at 32.0 million hectares as of Friday, according to data from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
Prices of new basmati RICE were unchanged in the Vashi market at INR 6,000-INR 6,400 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of sonam rice from Gujarat were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, he said.
As of Friday, the area sown under rabi paddy was up 2.6% on year at 2.21 million hectares, according to the department.
MAIZE prices were unavailable as the markets in Davanagere, Karnataka were also shut. The acreage under maize in the ongoing rabi season rose nearly 10% on year to 2.24 million hectares as of Friday, according to the department. End
