MUMBAI – Prices of pulses were unavailable in major key spot markets on Tuesday as they were shut on account of Makar Sankranti, traders said.
CHANA prices were unavailable as the markets in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were shut. Chana is expected to remain steady in the lower range till the arrival of the new rabi crop by mid-February, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. The demand for domestic chana is muted amid the availability of cheaper chana imports from Australia, he said.
Prices of chana were not available in Kota, Rajasthan as it was shut due to the festivities as well. The acreage of chana in the ongoing rabi season was 9.67 million hectares, up 0.8% from the area sown in the previous year as of Friday, according to data from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
Prices of TUR were unavailable as the markets in Solapur, Maharashtra, and Kalaburagi, Karnataka were shut. Prices of tur are likely to remain under pressure in the near term as arrivals of the kharif crop may increase, especially in Vidarbha, Maharashtra, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday, citing market experts. Demand is expected to remain low as quality issues in the new crop from Maharashtra and Karnataka, which have higher moisture content, continue to keep buyers away.
MOONG prices were also unavailable as markets in Akola, Maharashtra were shut due to a labour strike, Ankit Kedia, a local trader, said. Prices were also unavailable in Ashok Nagar, Madhya Pradesh.
The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India has procured 167,760.05 tonnes of moong as of Monday, which is 50.2% of the total Centre-sanctioned quantity of 334,416 tonnes under the price support scheme, according to data provided by the federation. End
