MUMBAI – Procurement of oilseeds by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India under the price support scheme as of Monday was 31% of the 5.48 million tonnes approved by the Centre for the kharif oilseed year 2024-25 (Oct-Sept), according to data by the central procurement agency.

Of the total quantity sanctioned for oilseed procurement, soybean has the largest share at 3.38 million tonnes. The government procured 978,583.32 tonnes of soybean, nearly 30% of the sanctioned quantity. The Centre has allowed six states--Karnataka, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat--to procure soybean from farmers at a minimum support price of INR 4,892 per 100 kg for 2024-25.

In Madhya Pradesh, NAFED procured 388,900.17 tonnes, which is nearly 28% of the sanctioned quantity of 1.4 million tonnes. The procurement period approved by the state government is Oct. 25 to Jan. 2. The procurement in Gujarat was 37,279.35 tonnes, 33% of the sanctioned quantity of 114,015 tonnes. This is because procurement in the state began only on Nov. 11 and is seen continuing till Feb. 9.

Despite prices of soybean falling below the minimum support price, the procurement in Karnataka and Maharashtra is also low due to the high moisture content in the new crop. Prices of soybean in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were below the minimum support price of INR 4,892 at INR 4,250-INR 4,450 per 100 kg as of Monday.

NAFED has procured only 18,282.05 tonnes of soybean in Karnataka, which is just 16% of the sanctioned quantity of 111,470 tonnes. In Maharashtra, 383,777.89 tonnes of soybean were procured, which was 27.2% of the sanctioned quantity of 1.41 million tonnes.

NAFED procured 726,323.91 tonnes of groundnut, which is nearly 35% of the total sanctioned quantity of 2.05 million tonnes. The Centre has allowed Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh to procure groundnuts at a minimum support price of INR 6,783 per 100 kg. However, the procurement has started only in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh with minimal purchases.

In Gujarat, 524,740.96 tonnes were procured, which is nearly 40% of the sanctioned quantity of 1.31 million tonnes. In Rajasthan, 150,483.65 tonnes of the sanctioned quantity of 531,828 tonnes was purchased, according to the data.

Meanwhile, procurement of sesamum is yet to begin in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The Centre has sanctioned procurement of 123 tonnes and 31,473 tonnes in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, respectively. The minimum support price for sesamum for 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) is INR 9,267 per 100 kg.

In the case of sunflower seeds, the Centre has allowed procurement only in Karnataka, with a sanctioned quantity of 13,210 tonnes at a minimum support price of INR 7,280 per 100 kg. So far, 3,278.25 tonnes, or nearly 25% of the sanctioned quantity, has been procured, as per the data.  End
