MUMBAI – Prices of chana are expected to remain under pressure this week due to steady imports from Australia and more of the rabi crop being harvested in the coming weeks, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in a weekly report on Monday. Demand may remain muted as traders are likely to be cautious about making large purchases.

However, some temporary demand to cater to the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, the upcoming wedding season, and Ramadan could limit the decline in prices, though a significant recovery seems unlikely, the association said. The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on Monday, will continue till Feb. 26, while the hold month of Ramadan is due from Feb. 28 to Mar. 29.

Chana shipments from Australia rose by a whopping 338% on month in November to 442,603 tonnes, according to data from Statistics Canada. The imports were up sharply from 31,607 tonnes in the same period last year.

Chana prices continued to be on a downtrend in the week ended Saturday due to weak demand from mills, abundant supply of cheaper imports from Australia, the availability of yellow peas, and new arrivals in some markets in Karnataka. The pace of harvest of the rabi crop is expected to increase in the coming days, the association said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were down by INR 50 from the previous week at INR 6,600-INR 6,650 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of chana in Bikaner, Rajasthan, fell by INR 100 from last week to INR 6,200-INR 6,250 per 100 kg.  End
