MUMBAI – The Centre Thursday launched the eighth edition of the National Programme for Organic Production with new regulations aimed at providing more visibility and ease of operations for organic stakeholders. It also launched TraceNet 2.0, an upgraded traceability platform for seamless operations and enhanced tools for regulatory oversight, according to an official release.

India has the potential to triple exports of organic produce to INR 200 billion in the next three years as more and more farmers enter organic farming, Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said at the launch of the programme. Currently, the export of organic produce is INR 50 billion to INR 60 billion, which could reach INR 200 billion in the next three years, he said. Indian farmers must slowly migrate to organic farming and increase both domestic production and capture the international market, Goyal said.

The upgraded traceability platform, TraceNet 2.0, will enable more user-friendly data analysis and generation of reports and data of agricultural exports, accessible to the general public, the release said. At the event, the first five registration certificates generated on TraceNet 2.0 were distributed by the minister to organic operators.

"The global demand for organic products is around Rs 1 lakh crore (INR 1 trillion) and with increased promotion and production, this demand may reach to Rs 10 lakh crore (INR 10 trillion). India has the largest number of organic farmers globally and ranks second in terms of area under organic cultivation. With some additional efforts, I am confident that we can become the global leader in organic farming significantly enhancing farmers' income and promoting Indian organic produce to the international market," Goyal said.  End
