MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose Tuesday in key spot markets across the country, tracking the rise in prices of imports, traders said. Prices of tur also rose due to an increase in need-based buying by millers, they said. Prices of urad were steady, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were up INR 75 from Monday at INR 6,700-INR 6,750 per 100 kg, Kailash Kakani, a local trader, said. Prices of domestic chana were up tracking a rise in the prices of imports, he said. Prices of imported chana rose by INR 200 from last week, he added.
However, the rise in price will not be sustained, Kakani said. "There is no reason for prices to rise further as demand for domestic chana is still sluggish, and is not seen increasing, at least for the next few weeks," he said.
Prices of chana in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 50 from Monday to INR 6,550-INR 6,600 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
Prices of the new TUR in Solapur, Maharashtra, rose by INR 100 from Monday to INR 7,500-INR 8,111 per 100 kg, according to the association. The market received 70–75 trucks, or 70,000 kg-75,000 kg of arrivals. "Demand rose slightly due to need-based buying by millers," traders said. However, prices could see a substantial rise only after mid-January, when the market receives arrivals of better quality tur, they said. Currently, arrivals of the new kharif crop have a high moisture content, lowering its quality.
Tur prices are likely to remain under pressure this week as millers and stockists avoid purchases due to high moisture content in the new kharif crop, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. Mills are waiting for the moisture level, which affects quality, to decline before processing more tur.
On the other hand, prices of the new tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, were stable at INR 6,526-INR 8,653 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals of the new tur were down by 760 bags at 4,241 bags (1 bag = 100 kg).
URAD prices in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,500-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were steady at 2,000 bags. Prices of urad in Solapur were also steady at INR 6,100-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader, said.
However, prices of urad are likely to fall in the next few weeks due to a slowdown in demand, Sanklecha said. "Just like chana, urad is also facing a seasonal slowdown in demand," he said. Prices are also weighed down due to expectations of higher imports of urad from Myanmar, he said. End
