MUMBAI – In the 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) season, sugar mills in India have produced 9.51 million tonnes of the sweetener as of Tuesday, down 16% from 11.3 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. The federation estimates net sugar production across the country in 2024-25 at 28 million tonnes, down 12% from 31.9 million tonnes produced last season.
Sugarcane production so far this season is down due to a decline in crushing in major producing states such as Karnataka, Gujarat, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu. In the current sugar season, as of Tuesday, 190 mills across Maharashtra, a major producer, have produced nearly 3 million tonnes of sugar. In the corresponding period last year, 203 mills in Maharashtra produced 3.82 million tonnes of sugar.
The country's average sugar recovery rate was 8.7%, compared to 9.2% last year, the federation said. So far this season, mills have crushed 109.6 million tonnes of sugarcane, compared to 123 million tonnes a year ago.
In Uttar Pradesh, 121 mills crushed 36.6 million tonnes of sugarcane to produce 3.3 million tonnes of sugar as of Tuesday. This is comparatively higher than the production during the same period last year, where 120 mills had crushed 36 million tonnes of cane and produced 3.5 million tonnes of sugar. The federation estimates sugar production in the state at 9.8 million tonnes in the current year, down from 10.37 million tonnes the previous year. The average sugar recovery is also down at 8.9% from 9.7% a year ago.
As of Tuesday, 77 mills in Karnataka crushed 24.2 million tonnes of sugarcane, compared to 26.4 million tonnes crushed by 73 mills a year ago. So far this season, mills in the state have produced 2.1 million tonnes of sugar, down 12.5% from 2.4 million tonnes a year ago.
The federation estimates sugar output in Karnataka at 4.5 million tonnes in 2024-25, down from 5.3 million tonnes last year. The average sugar recovery rate has been slightly lowered to 8.5% from 9.1% during the previous year. End
