MUMBAI – Prices of tur are expected to remain flat to firm this week due to congestion at the Chennai port, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report released Monday.
New crop arrivals will primarily depend on the weather in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat. However, buying may remain limited as mills await stocks of tur with lower moisture content. Only need-based buying is expected from millers and stockists are likely to stay on the sidelines. Millers are waiting for dry quality arrivals of new tur, once the weather gets clear.
During the week ended Saturday, domestic tur prices surged in major markets due to need-based buying by millers and good quality, along with lower arrivals from Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat due to rain and cloudy weather. On Saturday, tur prices in Akola in Maharashtra were in the range of INR 8,400-INR 8,425 per 100 kg, up INR 400 rupees from a week ago, the report said.
Prices of tur from Africa registered moderate gains, driven by rising buying interest by millers in state tenders, and their lower cost compared to domestic tur and Burma lemon, the report said. By contrast, prices of Burma lemon tur were weak due to lower freight quotes. The arrival of the new crop in Burma next week is expected to push lemon tur prices lower, it said.
However, sluggish demand for tur dal due to cheaper vegetables and additional supply from the new harvest in Myanmar could lower prices, it said. "Arrival pressure is expected after Jan. 15, with prices likely to drop and bottom out between February and mid-March," the report said. End
