India Oct tur imports surges 57% on year; Apr-Oct imports rise 85%

MUMBAI – India's imports of pigeon peas, or tur, rose nearly 57% on year to 260,373.06 tonnes in October from 165,917.45 tonnes a year ago, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The spike in imports was led by tur from Tanzania. The country imported 814,068.65 tonnes of tur in Apr-Oct, up 85% from 439,999.01 tonnes in the corresponding period last year.
Share of tur imports from Tanzania, with 114,619.52 tonnes, accounted for the highest, according to the data. The country has been a long-time exporter of tur to India, along with several other African nations. Mozambique was the second-largest exporter of tur to India at 81,622.45 tonnes, the data showed. Imports from the country in Apr-Oct was at 227,730.75, the highest among all countries for the given period, up 60.1% on year.
Other major exporters of tur in October were Kenya at 22,075.40 tonnes, Myanmar at 17,624.95 tonnes, Malawi at 16,742.82 tonnes, Sudan at 6,840.12 tonnes, Nigeria at 499.80 tonnes, Uganda at 223.00 tonnes and the United Arab Emirates at 223.00 tonnes.
The per tonne value of tur imported in October fell to $958.62 from $1,017.86 last year. However, the total value of tur imported in October rose by 47.8% on year to $249.60 million, the data showed. The total value of tur imported during Apr-Oct was $931.04 million, up 109.9% from $443.52 million in the same period last year.
India imported 799,945.14 tonnes pulses in October, up 67.7% on year from 477,076.93 tonnes a year ago, the data showed. End
