Chana falls on seasonal drop in demand; tur down, masur steady

MUMBAI – Prices of chana fell in key spot markets across the country due to a seasonal drop in demand, traders said. Prices of tur were also down due to ample arrivals of the new kharif crop from Karnataka, while prices of masur were steady, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were down by INR 75-INR 100 from Tuesday at INR 6,725-INR 6,750 per 100 kg, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. The market has entered a seasonal drop in demand that is seen at the end of the year, he said. Prices are expected to fall by another INR 100-INR 200 in the next few days, he said.
Prices are also weighed down by imports from Australia, which are slightly cheaper than domestic chana, Kakani said. The new shipment of Australian chana at the Mumbai port is priced at INR 6,600 per 100 kg, while prices of such shipments at the Mundra port stood at INR 6,550 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
On the other hand, prices of chana in Akola in Maharashtra were steady at INR 6,800-INR 6,850 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals fell by 200 bags to 200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
Prices of the new TUR in Akola were down by INR 150 from Tuesday at INR 8,900-INR 8,925 per 100 kg, according to the association, with arrivals steady at 200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). The market is receiving arrivals of the new kharif tur from Karnataka. The downtrend in prices resumed after a temporary rise on Tuesday, traders said. Prices are expected to drop further by mid-January as arrivals of the new kharif crop begin in Maharashtra, they said.
Similarly, prices of the new tur in Kalaburagi in Karnataka fell by INR 100 from Tuesday to INR 8,500-INR 9,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were up by 2,000 bags to 8,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg).
Prices of MASUR in Indore were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the moti variety of masur were steady in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh at INR 5,700-INR 6,050 per 100 kg. Prices of the choti variety were also steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, the association said.
Rabi sowing of masur as of Monday was down 1.6% on year at 1.6 million hectares, according to data from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. End
