MUMBAI – Prices of pulses were mixed across the country's spot markets on Tuesday, traders said. Prices of chana were down due to sluggish demand, while prices of tur were up due to a correction after a steep fall on Monday, they said. Prices of urad were stable, they said.
CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were down by INR 25 from Monday at INR 6,850-INR 6,875 per 100 kg, Ankit Kedia, a local trader, said. Arrivals were up by 200 bags at 400 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices are seen falling further as demand is seasonally low at the end of the year, Kedia said.
According to data released by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, rabi chana acreage in the country was up 1.9% on year at 8.6 million hectares as of Monday.
Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were down by INR 75 from Monday at INR 6,850-INR 6,875 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
Prices of the new TUR crop in Akola were up by INR 200 at INR 9,300-INR 9,350 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Prices rose after falling sharply by INR 1,000 on Monday, due to rise in arrivals of the new kharif tur. "Sellers are quoting higher rates today as prices have already dropped so much. Hence, they are reluctant to sell at lower prices today," he said. On Monday, 20,000-30,000 kg of the new crop arrived from Karnataka.
However, the rebound in prices is temporary, Kedia said. With arrivals of new tur anticipated from Solapur, Maharashtra, prices are bound to fall further, he said. "Prices may fall to the INR 8,000 per 100 kg level by mid-January when arrivals from Maharashtra begin in full swing," he said.
Prices of the new tur crop in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, were up by INR 100 at INR 8,500-INR 9,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were down by 6,000 bags to 6,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg).
URAD prices in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,500-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, according to the association, with arrivals steady at 200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices of urad in Solapur were also steady at INR 6,100-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, according to the association.
Prices of blackgram or urad are likely to be stable in the near-term due to need-based demand from millers, the association said in a report on Dec. 9. Good quality urad is available at lower rates and millers are actively buying it for crushing and processing. Prices are currently in the lower range because of arrival of the new kharif crop in markets, the association said.
Rabi sowing of urad as of Monday was down 17.4% on year at 319,000 hectares, according to data from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. End
