MUMBAI – Prices of tur and chana continued to fall on Friday and are expected to remain in a downtrend due to lower demand at higher prices and excess supply of these commodities, traders said. Prices of moong were steady, they said.
CHANA prices fell by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 6,800 per 100 kg in Akola, Maharashtra, due to lower demand at high levels and dumping of yellow peas in domestic markets, local trader Aniket Kedia said. Prices of chana also fell in Indore in Madhya Pradesh – by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 6,500 per 100 kg, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader.
Prices of domestic chana were weighed down by the availability of cheaper imports from Australia. Exports of Australian chana to India rose sharply to 109,622 tonnes in October from 25,692 tonnes in September, the India Pulses and Grains Association reported, citing data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Excess availability of a cheaper substitute, yellow peas, is also pulling down prices. Prices of yellow peas range between INR 3,000 and INR 4,000 per 100 kg, making it significantly cheaper than chana.
Prices of TUR fell by INR 100 per 100 kg to INR 9,900 per 100 kg in Akola as the new kharif crop from Karnataka had started to arrive in the market, Kedia said. Prices are seen in a downtrend due to a better and higher supply of tur from Karnataka and prospects of bumper production in Maharashtra, he said. Arrivals of the new tur crop in Maharashtra will begin in 10–15 days, Kedia said.
Current arrivals of tur in Karnataka have a reasonable moisture content of 14%, Kedia said. Tur prices are expected to fall by INR 200-INR 400 per 100 kg in the near term due to rising supply, he said.
Prices of MOONG were steady at INR 6,800-7,300 per 100 kg in Akola, local trader Ashok Gupta said. He expects moong prices to remain steady in the near term due to lack of new cues. End
